I saw a diamondback at dicks sporting goods today for around $450. it looked nice and everything but i honestly don’t know what im looking at. I want something that can withstand hard rugged trails and 6 ft drops but i dont want it to break the bank either. Im looking to spend up to $500 hundred on a bike. What should i be looking for? Any good sites to look at? Thanks a lot for all your help.

Any full susp. bike from Dick’s will NOT support 6′ drops! Any f/s bike under $1800 and less than 5″ travel both front and rear will NOT support continued use of 5-6′ drops for very long. What you are looking at @ Dick’s are replicas of Full suspension bikes, Not actual full suspension bikes that can take the kind of abuse that you might think. I purchased my “first good bike” from there in 05 for what I thought might be able to handle that kind of ridding and I paid $800 for it- about $400 too much! Although it was built correctly the components were about as low end (on an $800 bike) as you can get and it was an Iron Horse Warrior Trail. Good name in mtb’s but not a good bike! Any of the bikes you are looking at for your intended use will NOT last you long. For a bike that you want you will have to buy used and older to get something decent, sorry. No full sus. bike under $900 is worth a damn! Not everyone has alot of money to spend on the bike of their dreams and it took me not too long to figure out what was worth the money and what wasnt. Dick’s isnt the place for you to buy a bike for the use you intend. Check your local shops and save your money before you buy!!!! you can check out Pricepoint.com at the Sette bikes, you can look on Performancebike.com and unfortunately there is nothing in your price range there either muchless anything that will hold up to your intended use. You can look at bikesdirect.com and again , nothing that will stand up to your intended use…..the list will not change! edward w

At the price you’re looking, don’t buy a FS bike. A good rear shock can cost $300-400 so there’s no way to get a good FS for only a little more.

The fancier the bike the more you’ll have to spend for quality. I wouldn’t buy a FS bike for under $1000 (pref. $2k +)

Get a nice hard tail & you’ll be much happier. And get it at a real bike shop. singletrack65
