Well we certainly have it now, don’t we?

born again – since when is it our job to dictate what other people “need” in their life and legislate it? Sounds more Fascist than Democratic. Viva Liberty! [the tao of viva]

Because people of the USA have been fed a lot of propaganda and it’s hard to dispel that. Socialism is a dirty word in the states and government control of anything is severely disliked. Canadian Gal

  9. Bert says:

Please explain how you came to the conclusion that health care is a basic right that should be provided by someone other than yourself…

If you come join us in reality, you’ll understand that your right to health care ends when someone else is providing it…you have every right to obtain health insurance on your own. Nobody has ever denied that right…

Grrr. I’m never going to find out where this concept came from. Nobody can ever tell me!! Bert

  11. mandy says:

I think it would take too much profit from the doctors and drug companies to make it a public service. It’s too profitable for certain people to easily change it. mandy

because universal health care will give our government even more power… something we definitely don’t need right now tennis1234

  13. Insidious says:

Fairly simple. The Conservative (read Conservative, not necessarily Republican) agenda has been an open book for 80 years. They haven’t been shy about this. They haven’t tried to hide it.

They’ve been very upfront that their economic agenda is aimed at helping the wealthy (supply side economics) and big business (radical deregulation) and f*cking everyone else – opposing universal heath care, minimum wage, work, safety and environmental safety laws.

To their credit, Conservatives have openly given the finger to the poor and working classes. They have not been subtle about it. I can appreciate that much. Insidious

  14. jimbeam958 says:

Healthcare is a basic right here too. No hospital can turn you away regardless of your ability to pay.

Ya, it goes on your credit report if you don’t pay, but who said that good credit is a basic right? jimbeam958

  15. Grocer Jack says:

Well depends who you lump into that ‘western democracy’ group.

    But pretty much yes.

The US spends about twice as much (per capita) on health care as any other nation in the world, still has tens of millions uninsured and doesn’t have particularly great health statistics (life expectancy/infant mortality etc).

I don’t know what the answer is, but something isn’t right with the current system surely. Grocer Jack

  16. Just Plain American says:

Even with the passage of the bill, you still will not have a public health care system. Just Plain American

  17. Freedom Wins III says:

Looks like you will get it and all the added cost with it!! Same as those who have private insurance! It’s not going to be FREE!! Freedom Wins III

  18. Mark says:

Same reason that we’re the only western super-power.

Health care is not a basic right.

    We’re not a democracy.

And we do look after our own. It’s called charity. Mark

  19. Dana the Great - Sans Culotte says:

In today’s current American society, you cannot live without proper health care. It is a basic right, as part of our innate right to LIFE, LIBERTY, and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. How am I supposed to live if I am dying from a curable disease? Dana the Great – Sans Culotte

  20. Samian's Fifteenth Account says:

Thanks to the US, the European continent and Japan doesn’t have to worry about totalitarianism.

Plus, we don’t need a “public health care” system since the law of Supply & Demand will mean that the Suppliers (doctors, pharmaceuticals) will bankrupt the government. Samian’s Fifteenth Account

  21. Kevin B says:

Because we’re smart? It’s also the reason that America is referred to as the land of opportunity. Because or used to be because we didn’t rob from the rich to give to the internet using, cell phone and bling buying so called poor. Kevin B

  22. yutsnark says:

It’s a vestige of the cold war. Americans still think the commies want to destroy our way of life. yutsnark

  23. SammyCal says:

There is a public health care system, there simply isn’t a national health care plan.

Health care is not a right and no government does it as well as private industry does and can.

It is not the job of government to “look after citizens”, it is the job of government to keep the playing field as level as possible. SammyCal

  31. Older and Wiser says:

That’s like saying we have a right to food, shelter, and clothing (which we don’t) If we didn’t have charities in America, lack of these basic needs would be killing people off or causing more crime out of necessity. One person wanted to know where the concept of these extra rights came from. My belief is they came from the prison system. If it’s required for prisoners in the penal system, then it should be available to every free man and woman.

Also, America is NOT a democracy, it’s a Republic. Read the constitution. Older and Wiser
